The Container Method

This is a really helpful tool if you are prone to getting stuck in your process. Maybe you are afraid of getting taken out by your pain and it’s starting to feel overwhelming or when you are at work and don’t have time to let yourself process whatever is coming up.

Imagine putting whatever the pain is, the feeling, the memory in a container. You can choose what it looks like, the size, etc. Imagine opening it up and putting whatever you need to in the container and putting the lid on it. Then imagine putting it on a shelf to come back to when you are ready or have more time.

Take a second to let your heart know that you will come back to process this.

When you are ready to process what’s in the container just imagine taking it off the shelf and opening it back up. You have the ability to open it and close it as much as you need to. The most important thing is to honor what your heart is needing in this. Don’t use this as a way to stuff and avoid your pain, but a way to help you put something aside for a short period of time until you have capacity to give it the attention it needs.
